Winter Brew Recommendations at London Brewers’ Market

Winter is coming (if it’s not already here), and we are looking forward to cosying up next to the nearest fireplace with some of these brews you can pick up at the market:

Fellowship Porter from Redemption Brewing

A stalwart choice in the sea of dark beers, the Fellowship Porter is a wonderful beer to toast the festive season with. This is another brew we are huge fans of served on cask, but it’s mighty tasty in bottle as well.

Pfeffernusse Saison from Anspach & Hobday

If you thought saisons were only for summer, this Christmas brew from Anspach & Hobday may change your mind. Based on the German spiced biscuits, cloves and nutmeg play with sweet malt for this medium-bodied brew that’s Christmas in a bottle.

London Smoke from The Five Points Brewing Company

London Smoke Twitter

The Five Points’ London Smoke is as deep and fathomless as a winter’s night. Tobacco leaf, liquorice, dark chocolate and light smokiness similar to a bonfire at a distance make up the complex flavours in this imperial smoked porter. It’s a fireside favourite.

Nightwatchman from East London Brewing Company

This chestnut-hued ale is a thing of beauty on cask. Profoundly well-balanced with notes of dark caramel, the Nightwatchman is supremely easy-drinking and a great one to enjoy as a session ale through the winter weeks in a cosy pub or the snug confines of your home.

Orange & Chocolate Stout from Brew By Numbers

Brewed with cacao nibs and the aromatic zest of Seville Oranges, this tasty little number from Brew By Numbers is sure to be a hit with any fan of this classic flavour pairing. Have it alongside a chocolate dessert this season for an extra hit of tasty!

Neu from Orbit BeersIMG_2233

Orbit’s Neu is an altbier based on a style hailing from Düsseldorf. Amber in colour, this is a lovely beer with toasty, nutty and biscuity flavours and a crisp, dry finish. It pairs well with the festive foodstuffs found this time of year.

Pentonville Oyster Stout from Hammerton Brewery

Hammerton Brewery is carrying on the tradition of their namesake with this wonderful beer. Fresh Maldon oysters are used in the brew for the Pentonville Oyster Stout, resulting in a smooth stout featuring slight salty notes from the oysters and sweet notes from the dark malts.

1xNorthernLatCan_S22Northern Latitude Winter Ale from Fourpure Brewing Company

For fans of hops, this seasonal brew from Fourpure is an American red rye ale with an assertively citrusy, spicy hop character. Available in cans, it’s a delicious ale that is a perfect pal to take along to your next Christmas or New Year’s Eve party.

Heavy Water from Beavertown Brewery

A sour cherry and sea salt stout isn’t something often in a brewery’s repertoire, but we’re glad that Heavy Water is a beer the folks at Beavertown create! Additionally brewed with muscovado sugar and Chinook hops, this is a unique beer you should definitely get your hands on.

These are just some of the beers you can find from the 26 different breweries featured at London Brewers’ Market on Saturday, the 28th of November! Be sure to join us and Independent Label Market from 11am until 6pm and Old Spitalfields Market.

Original Gravity: The London Brew Scene

We’ve asked filmmaker Kevin Karaca to chat with us at LBM about the short film he’s been working on called Original Gravity: The London Brewing Scene, which will be released soon. Here’s what Kevin had to say:

FIG_01

The past 5 years have been some of the most exciting years in London’s beer history; we’ve seen the rise of around 80 new breweries within the M25 alone!! That’s not forgetting of course the hundreds of other micro-breweries opening around the UK as well; so much so that out government announced that “Britain has returned to its rightful role as a global ‘brewing powerhouse’ … the past 2 years has seen breweries opening up at 3 every week”. The previous few years has seen the London Craft Beer Festival being hosted alongside the Great British Beer Festival, both beside London Beer City – a week of city wide beer events. The Five Points Brewing Company have set up the every-so-often London Brewers Market which hosts a huge selection of great London brews whose website you are now on and whose event you will surely be attending on the 28th of November – I know I will!

FIG_02

While all this has been going on, we at the Original Gravity Film Team (no relation to our dear friends at Original Gravity Magazine) have been busy capturing all the exciting things going on! Our idea was to show the thoughts of those working in London’s brewing scene and try to understand why it has all started now & what our beery future was looking like. Along our year-and-a-half long adventure we found that London’s brewers were a community like no other we’d ever encountered before; helping each other out, lending hops & malt to neighbours down the road, sharing palates whilst shipping & finally all drinking together. This camaraderie really captured us, and every day we’d witness more evidence of it.

“This is an important film, brilliantly executed” (Daniel Neilson, Nov 2015)

We got hold of some of London’s most important breweries such as The Kernel, Sambrook’s, Five Points, Beavertown and Hop Stuff together with the UK’s best beer commentators, including the likes of Pete Brown & Jane Peyton. Touching upon topics such as the recession’s influence, the US craft scene & casks importance within the UK’s craft beer scene.

We’re so excited that we’ve finished and are finally ready to show you behind the scenes with a chance to meet the brewers & find out what we’ve discovered about London’s beer world.

Looking back at London Beer City

It’s been a month since the end of all the fun of this year’s London Beer City. We asked Patrick Matthewson, who has been helping out with London Brewers’ Market behind the scenes, to give us a run-down of some of the several events that happened.

London Beer City was an incredible celebration of the vibrant beer scene, a time for brewers and beer enthusiasts to come together and appreciate the mass of unbelievable beer being produced from all across the globe. The festival was a fantastic opportunity to see London’s position in the craft beer revolution with pubs all across the city getting involved and showcasing their commitment to great brews.

Cask is Important at The Duke's Head

The week was jam-packed with exciting events such as a brew day with Clarkshaws, the launch of Redchurch’s barrel-aged saison and a look into label art at Camden Town Brewery. Particularly exciting was Cask Is Important at The Duke’s Head in Highgate, a week long exploration of cask beer and it’s relevance in today’s craft beer scene. The event was curated by beer writer Matt Curtis and the team at The Duke’s Head. They curated a truly outstanding list featuring brews from The Five Points Brewing Company, Moor and Magic Rock amongst others greatly enriched by a tutored tasting from Matt Curtis. The beers all helped to reaffirm cask as a vital part of our brewing culture and showcased unique flavour profiles from well established brews like Beavertown’s Smog Rocket. A particular highlight was the exclusive brew from Weird Beard, Curtis and The Duke’s Head – The Duke of Dank, a big, hoppy red IPA which left a lingering impression on the consumer with rich fruity flavours. The beer is released in bottles and is well worth tasting.

London Beer City highlighted the versatility of beer and in particular it’s powerful relation to food with events such as a Japanese food pairing at Brew By Numbers and a pie and ale session with Fuller’s. During the week Ned Palmer hosted some delicious cheese and beer pairing at some of London’s best breweries. The sessions created some unbelievable taste combinations and showed beer to be a worthy challenger to the more established wine and cheese pairings. These enthralling events really encapsulated the brilliance of London Beer City and shows how beer is beginning to challenge established culinary pairings.

Mad Hatter Tap Takeover at Mother Kelly's

Amongst all of this were tap takeovers from breweries at the forefront of the craft beer scene. These included Derbyshire heavyweights Thornbridge, the consistently inventive Mad Hatter Brewing, Welsh favourites Tiny Rebel and Hackney brewers The Five Points Brewing Company. These events at venues including Mother Kelly’s, Hop & Berry and Hand of Glory offered consumers an insight into the range of brews being made by brewers in different areas of the country.

London Beer City neatly included the Great British Beer Festival and London Craft Beer Festival. Both were excellent examples of how diverse the beer scene is at the moment and delighted fans of both cask and keg no end. They included brilliant brews from Partizan, London Brewing Co and Pressure Drop amongst others and further established London at the forefront of the beer scene.

Ultimately London Beer City was a special week and was something that brought together the disparate elements of the beer scene into one incredible celebration. It created a tangible representation of the community that is developing around beer in London. A big thank you to Will Hawkes, writer of Craft Beer London, for all his hard work and for organising such an unbelievable week. Bring on next year!

fun times in the London Brewers' Market beer garden

Photographer Anita Lawlor has taken some excellent photos of our most recent London Brewers’ Market at Old Spitalfields Market.

This market was a bit different, as we were perched above the beer garden with brewers inside a disused restaurant space and along a terrace. If you were there, relive that ace Saturday! If you weren’t there, see what you missed and be sure to attend our next one, where we’ll be back alongside Independent Label Market in November.

Summer Beers at London Brewers’ Market

Summertime is here and we are loving every bit of it! Whether you’re headed to the local park for a picnic, enjoying a BBQ at a mate’s house or enjoying the sun in a pub’s beer garden, London’s brewers have you covered for great beer whatever you’re up to this season.

Here are some of our picks of summer beers you could find at the London Brewers’ Market:

Snakecharmer IPA – One Mile End
We are big fans of One Mile End, and Snakecharmer is a great introduction to their range. If you don’t get a chance to try it at London Brewers’ Market, head off afterwards to The White Hart Brew Pub, the home of the brewery, for a taste of this brew, alongside other One Mile End’s ace creations.
Also try: Battersea IPA from Sambrook’s Brewery

Hook Island Red in malt

Hook Island Red – The Five Points Brewing Company
Although the summer is often dominated by lagers and pale ales, there’s plenty of wonderful things to be said for a glass of Hook Island Red on draught or a bottle from the fridge. The beer is a fantastic mix of flavours both fruity, bitter and resinous, and great for those BBQs in the park.
Also try: Notting Hill Ruby Rye from Moncada Brewery

India Hells Lager – Camden Town Brewery
If you come across a mistaken soul who things all lagers are bland and boring, toss a can of India Hells Lager his or her way. Doubly-dry-hopped, the IHL is a clean, brisk brew which will go down a treat at the next picnic or summer party you’re at.
Also try: Frontier from Fuller’s

Brixton Beer

Electric IPA – Brixton Brewery
All of the beers in Brixton’s range are solid, but our personal favourite is their Electric IPA, named after the famed Electric Avenue. American hops bring forth some excellent citrus flavours, making it a perfect pick for the beer garden or your friend’s house party.
Also try: Worm Catcher IPA from Late Knights Brewery, Brockwell IPA from Canopy Beer Co.

Raspberry Lemon Saison – Partizan Brewing
The super-refreshing Raspberry Lemon Saison from Partizan is a delicious and distinctive beer to drink in the London Brewers’ Market beer garden or at their brewery’s arch in Bermondsey on Saturdays. Also look out for their Lemon Thyme Saison for a more botanical brew–and one of our organisers’ favourites.
Also try: Raspberry Wheat from Meantime Brewing Co.

N7 Pale – Hammerton Brewery
The N7 from Hammerton is a superb beer featuring six different hops from the United States and New Zealand. This is a particularly juicy beer that’s doing really well on the Britain’s 100 Hottest Beers list and if you’re a fan of other pale ales and haven’t yet given this one a try, don’t miss it!
Also Try: Windsor Knot from Windsor & Eton Brewery, Signature Pale from Signature Brew

West Coast Saison – Fourpure Brewing Co.
Fourpure’s West Coast Saison is a Belgian-style saison with an American accent. This beer is incredibly refreshing, and a great introduction to the saison style if you haven’t had a chance to explore this beer style much, or are looking for a local alternative to Belgian offerings.
Also try: Blood Orange Saison from One Mile End

beavertown-3 small

Gamma Ray – Beavertown Brewery
A quintessential example of an American pale ale, Beavertown’s Gamma Ray features a merry band of five different hops to create a gorgeously-flavoured beer. The colourful design on the cans only further enhance the appeal of this great APA.
Also try: IPA from Howling Hops

Paradise Pale – Redchurch Brewery
Billed as a session IPA, the Paradise Pale packs an immensely flavourful punch at only 3.7% ABV, making it a great beer to pint through in the summer sun. The Paradise Pale was enjoyed by us recently at Field Day, along with a few other brews on this list.
Also try: Zephyr from Truman’s Brewery, Notting Hill Summer from Moncada Brewery

The Smoked Brown – Anspach & Hobday
Not only is The Smoked Brown from Anspach & Hobday a tasty beer on its own, its smoked malt character makes it a great beer to have alongside BBQ meats and grilled vegetables. Plus, this brew is just begging to be added to a marinade that would no doubt be out of this world.
Also try: By the Horns Old Smoke English Tea Bitter

Jamboree – East London Brewing Company
If you’re looking for a beer that’s super quaffable, ELB’s Jamboree is a fantastic candidate. Using English hops, it provides a fantastic counterpoint to some of the other beers on this list. A pint of this in a pub garden on a lazy Saturday is absolute bliss.
Also try: Kew Brewery Pagoda No. 1

Gosnells Mead

Gosnells Mead
We love beer, but we like to branch out into other drinks on occasion, and Gosnells Mead is a superb tipple for the sunny weather. Remarkably light-bodied, this is fantastic to have on hand when you’re in the mood for something sweeter.
Also try: Cider from Crate Brewery

London Brewers’ Market Tap Takeovers

In the run-up to our next London Brewers’ Market on Saturday, the 11th, we are working with some excellent local venues for London Brewers’ Market Tap Takeovers.

The Three Compasses, Dalston

Starting as early as this Wednesday, the 1st of July, expect to see a variety of beers from London’s brewers on the taps at locations around London. So what pubs and bottle shops are taking part in our tap takeovers? Have a look at the map:

Here’s a small selection of what some of the pubs and bottle shops have planned for their tap takeovers of London beer:

  • The Duke’s Head – This fine Highgate institution will be first out the gate for the London Brewers’ Market Tap Takeovers, starting theirs on Wednesday, the 1st of July. Stop in this Wednesday to see Anspach & Hobday for Bottle Club (ticket required) and this Thursday, the 2nd, to see Lee from Hammerton Brewery. If you haven’t been The Duke’s Head yet, the tap takeover will be a brilliant excuse to visit this wonderful pub, and there’s plenty of other events coming up worth your time.
  • The Prince – Stoke Newington’s superb The Prince will be featuring several London breweries on their many taps from Friday, the 3rd, through Saturday, the 11th. Expect breweries such as Beavertown, Redchurch and Camden Town on draught, served alongside some winning food from chef Will Dee.
  • The Hop & Berry – A fine pub already championing London brewers, The Hop & Berry will be holding its London Brewers’ Market Tap Takeover from Saturday, the 4th until the 11th. 12 keg taps and 3 cask taps will be hosting a range of brews from folks such as Orbit Beers, Fourpure, ELB and more.

Holy Cheese Mountain The Cock

  • The Cock Tavern – Stalwart supporters of the London brewing scene and the original home of Howling Hops, The Cock will be rocking the London Brewers’ Market Tap Takeover from Monday, the 6th through Sunday, the 12th of July. Do NOT miss Raw Cheese Power‘s Holy Cheese Mountain appearing on the bar Thursday, the 9th. Unless, of course, you don’t like cheese. But we sure as hell do.
  • Jackdaw & Star – This Homerton gem will be featuring plenty of fine London brewers on their taps from Monday, the 6th, through Sunday, the 12th. Don’t miss out on the fine food from Sugar Shack, and there’s a bourbon tasting on Thursday, the 9th.
  • The Three Compasses – Dalston’s glory, The Three C’s will be supporting several London breweries including local heroes The Five Points and Pressure Drop. Find over half the taps filled with London beer from Wednesday, the 8th, through Saturday, the 11th.
  • The Crown and Shuttle – One of the closest pubs to Old Spitalfields Market, The Crown and Shuttle make a great place to head to after the London Brewers’ Market shuts at 7pm (or the first start of your London Brewers’ Market Tap Takeover pub crawl…). But don’t miss stopping into this pub earlier in the week, as they’ll be running the tap takeover from Wednesday, the 8th of July through the Saturday.
  • The Royal Albert – This charming New Cross pub will also be hosting its tap takeover from Wednesday, the 8th, and you’ll find London brews on through the 12th, making it a great place for your post-market Sunday lunch. They will be focusing on South London brewers, so check in to find some truly local offerings.

The White Hart Brew Pub

  • The White Hart Brew Pub – Also not far from Old Spitalfields Market, The White Hart is home to One Mile End, who will be at the market on Saturday, the 11th. You can try their fantastic range of beers early, alongside other local brewers, from Wednesday the 8th through Sunday, the 12th.
  • The Beer Boutique – The Beer Boutique will feature London brewers on their kegerator from Friday, the 10th of July through Saturday, the 12th. Fill up a flagon or growler from Beavertown or Kernel here.
  • Hops & Glory – Islington’s home of Solvay Society who brew beneath the pub, Hops & Glory will be continuing its reputation for great beer with a London Brewers’ Market Tap Takeover from Friday, the 10th through Sunday, the 12th, so stop in for some super cosy vibes.
  • BrewDog Shoreditch – Close to Old Spitalfields, BrewDog Shoreditch will be hosting its London Brewers’ Market Tap Takeover on Saturday and Sunday, the 11th and 12th of July. Stop in after London Brewers’ Market and taste all the beers you might have missed at Old Spitalfields.

There’s more venues taking part, including The Craft Beer Co. in Islington, The Kings Arms in Bethnal Green and Clapton Craft in glorious Clapton featuring London beer on the bar or through their growler fills. We’ll be updating the Tap Takeover page with their information soon!

Meanwhile, if you run a pub, bar or bottle shop and would like to take part in a London Brewers’ Market Tap Takeover before (or even a wee bit after) the London Brewers’ Market on Saturday, the 11th of July, there’s still time to get involved! Get in touch with Doreen and she’ll send across the details.
