There will be a phenomenal selection of food from Mama’s Jerk, Jackalope’s All American, Hot Flavours, Little Leaf Vegan Pizza, Aunty Bunny’s HUT, No 57A, LamJam, The Sandwich, Meru, Munchies, Soul Kitchen, Ducky Beaks, and Pig Dogs & Brisket. On the London Brewers’ Market blog, we are featuring a monthly round-up of upcoming and unmissable events for London’s beer drinkers introduced by Rebecca Pate of Brewing East. Here are her picks, and stay tuned for a later post focusing exclusively on all the London brewers’ events at London Beer City.

With August comes London Beer City, ten days replete with beer festivals, tap takeovers and meet the brewer events starting this Friday, the 5th, and running until Sunday, the 14th. Beer aficionados will have already trawled through the immense itinerary, but we can’t let this eclipse other exciting happenings across the capital throughout the month.

We’ve compiled a list of events unaffiliated with London Beer City to further enhance your August. Whether it’s to help you ease into the month, keep you energised during LBC 2016 or to temper the harshness of LBC 2016 withdrawal, here’s more to pencil into your diary:

RICHMOND BREWERS’ FAIR: Saturday August 6, 12:00-19:30. Although it’s based in Surrey, some London breweries are featured as part of this CAMRA real ales event, including Kew Brewery and Long Arm Brewing Company. It follows the success of the inaugural Brewers’ Fair held in February and promises beer, live music and food stalls.

GREAT BRITISH BEER FESTIVAL: Tuesday, 9 August- Saturday, 13 August. Various times. This CAMRA-run festival will showcase over 900 real ales alongside ciders, perries and international beers. Come celebrate some great local examples and raise a glass to cask. In between libation, live music, food stalls and even traditional pub games will be on offer, all under a single roof with 55,000 other thirsty patrons at Olympia London. Who will be crowned 2016’s the Champion Beer of Britain? We’re on tenterhooks.

THE RAKE’S 10TH ANNIVERSARY: Wednesday, 10 August. Two sessions: 12:00-17:00 & 17:30- 22:00. The Rake in Borough Market- London’s coveted specialist beer outlet- is celebrating ten successful years in business with an evening hosted by Melissa Cole, esteemed and award-winning beer and food writer. Cole will be curating an odyssey across a landscape of tremendous beers- and, unbelievably, it’s all free. Act fast as places are limited. The Rake, 14 Winchester Walk, Borough Market SE1 9AG. COLLABORATION RANGE / HOME BREW DEPOT LA LAUNCH PARTY: Thursday, 11 August, 19:00-01:00 (12 August). Home Brew Depot is hoping to crack the American market and to celebrate, they’re releasing two collaboration recipes with One Mile End and Hackney Brewery. The former is the home brewer’s version of Snakes Alive DIPA and the latter is a summery saison. Both head brewers will be live brewing on the night, there will be beers available from the breweries and live music to boot.

ONE KEG WONDER SERIES – BREW BY NUMBERS: Thursday, 11 August, 19:00. This is the launch of Simon the Tanner’s One Keg Wonder series and they have something very special lined up for the night: a maple pecan brown ale from Brew By Numbers that’s never seen light within the M25. One keg only means just that: once it’s gone, it’s gone. Three other beers from Brew By Numbers will also be available on the night.

CRATE BEER & LA FROMAGERIE CHEESE TASTING: Thursday, 11 August, 18:00 & 20:00. Nothing marries quite like beer and cheese. Hackney Wick’s canalside hotspot, Crate Brewery, will be pairing four of their beers, including some examples of their limited Brewers Tap range, with cheese from La Fromagerie. Guided by beer sommelier & maître fromager Tom Williams, this will brie a gouda time.

PAINTING PARTY WITH FIVE POINTS: Wednesday, 17 August, from 18:00. This is your chance to see if beer really does fuel creativity. Look Mum No Hands! on the Southbank is hosting an evening of artistic pursuits in conjunction with The Five Points Brewing Company where art materials are supplied with the purchase of a pint. A range of Five Points will be available, so channel your inner Picasso over a solid beer.

ORBIT BEERS TAP TAKEOVER: Wednesday, 17 August, from 17:00. Those music buff brewers at Orbit Beers descend upon The Rake in Borough Market to bring a little hi-fidelity to your pint glass. Their range will be proffered and the brewers will be on hand to answer your burning questions, like just how do you flavour a Köln style lager with the Velvet Underground?

SAMBROOK’S BREW SCHOOL: Saturday, 20 August, 12:00-17:00. Sambrook’s Brewery welcomes brewmasters and novices alike to create a perfect iteration of a craft beer with the Grainfather, an all-in-one homebrew system. A hands-on brewing experience, a brewery tour and the opportunity to quiz Sambrook’s head brewer, Sean Knight, are included. Samples of the Sambrook’s range will also be flowing. Following the session, attendees will be given bottles of their own brew, so better start thinking of a punny beer name now.

MEET THE BREWER- HIVER: Wednesday, 24 August, 18:30-20:30. Hiver Beers have been causing a buzz with their range of beer fermented with raw honeys. Using British ingredients and suppliers, Hiver has salvaged the reputation of honey beer from other artificial, cloying interpretations on the market. Have a chat with the team and pollinate your palate with samples of the beer. Oh, and brush up on your entomology- there’s prizes at stake on the night.

Brewing their beer just off Amhurst Road since early 2013–a five-minute walk from St John at Hackney!–The Five Points have become an East London brewer well-known beyond the borough for their full-flavoured, classic brews in keg, can, cask and bottle.

One Mile End

One Mile End launched in October 2014 beneath The White Hart Brew Pub, Whitechapel, London. They quickly established a core range of excellent craft beers whilst simultaneously filling The White Hart’s taps with experimental one-off specials. 2016 marks their move into Tottenham on a bigger brew kit to amp up their core range and bring out some bigger, slightly off kilter beer this year!

Solvay Society

Making their first foray into the London Brewers’ Market, Solvay Society takes inspiration from the The Solvay Conferences that brought together the greatest minds in physics and chemistry in the heart of Brussels, leading to some of the most fundamental discoveries of our time. Founded in 2014 by homebrewers Roman, a physicist, and JP, an engineer, Solvay Society are interpreting Belgian style beers with a modern twist.

Top folks brewing top beers, Hackney Brewery were established in 2011, making them the first registered brewery in their namesake borough. Creating a beloved selection of cask ales as well as a dynamic seasonal and craft range, Hackney Brewery are a hive of activity in their railway arch near Hoxton Station to supply the bars, pubs and bottle shops who stock their fine brews.

London Brewing Co.

Beginning its life in The Bull in Highgate , London Brewing Co. are now brewing a large range of ales in The Bohemia in North Finchley and have recently expanded to supply beyond the two North London brewpubs, much to the enjoyment of those elsewhere! See them at their stall for some special summery brews to be enjoyed at Hackney Summer Fete.

The Dalston-based 40FT launched in 2015 and have been brewing a selection of delicious beers in their shipping container, including their refreshing Larger. Pay a visit to their brewery tap room, which is also a shipping container and open on most Friday evenings and Saturdays–it’s a short bus ride away from the Hackney Summer Fete!

Based in nearby Leyton, their beers have been a popular feature at our London Brewers’ Markets as well as in several nearby pubs, bottle shops and bars. Tuck into some of their cans to fuel the rest of your weekend after the Fete.

London Beer Lab

Calling itself an open source brewery, London Beer Lab started in 2012, as a brewery making stellar brews as well as a resource to teach others how to brew their own beer! Courses and workshops are available at their location in Loughborough Junction and in Brixton as part of The Beer Hive.

Home Brew Depot

Want to get your start into the brewing world? See our friends at Home Brew Depot to get started with a home brew kit of your very own! Their brewkits are suitable for beginners, and if you want to improve your home brewing skills, ask them about their brew school classes.

Not even April showers could dampen spirits at the inaugural London Brewers’ Market of 2016.

Held in partnership with the Independent Label Market on the 4 April, Old Spitalfields Market was occupied by 26 independent brewers from across the capital. Attracting a steady stream of pundits for one afternoon, drinkers and breweries came together to exalt great beer. Brewers eagerly showcased a range of styles, representing the innovative spirit behind London’s growing brewing scene.

With such a dizzying selection on offer, it was a defensible act to overlook a stall. It was equally pardonable if- instead of pushing the boat out- you were tempted by an old favourite. The cold, harsh reality is that it was impossible to try everything on offer.

With that acknowledgement of our individual limitations—whether attributable to time or ABVs—I’ve compiled a list of five beers that were proffered at LBM. These are representative of the spectrum of styles currently in demand in the city.

• The Five Points Brewing Company: Vito’s Brown Ale (Now known as Brick Field Brown)
The most recent version of this brown ale was unveiled at LBM. Although it pours an opaque black, its high carbonation and dry finish made it a highly sessionable choice. It delivered warm malty notes with hints of dark chocolate. Deliciously moreish and undoubtedly one to track down again.

• Hackney Brewery: Kiwi Thunder
A solid IPA with a clout of antipodean flavours. The New Zealand hops gave it aromas of juicy grapefruit, orange peel and other tropical notes- the taste also delivered the same citrusy punch, balanced with light sweetness from the malt. A zesty IPA that’s worth revisiting.

• Rocky Head Brewery: Pale Ale
An American pale ale from a small brewery based in Southfields, this was a flavoursome and balanced pale ale. Golden, unfiltered and using new world hops, this smooth-drinking pint had aromas of citrus and pine. A hint of sweetness from the malt and a clean finish make this a fruity and pleasant choice.

• One Mile End: Blood Orange Wheat DIPA
With an ABV of 7.4%, this packed a punch. A complex aroma of marmalade, pepper and citrus, this dark golden beer was intensely citrusy at first sip. The bitter hops then kicked in and the alcohol lent a warming finish. It grew on me, but I didn’t dare go back for a second so early in the afternoon.

• Anspach & Hobday: The Sour Dry Hop
A sour/wild ale that was outstanding. It carried an aroma of acidic lemon and followed through with lip-puckering tartness. It finished with a dry crispness and screamed out for an afternoon session in the sun.

This is by far a non-exhaustive list, but it highlights the varied tastes catered for at LBM and across London more generally. It will be fascinating to see what styles prevail at the next LBM-yet to be confirmed-but we hopefully won’t be kept on tenterhooks for too long.

Crate Brewery, Meantime Brewing Co, Gipsy Hill Brewing Company and Camden Town Brewery have been added to the line-up of featured breweries. Their fantastic beer will be joining brews from The Five Points Brewing Company, Hackney Brewery, Beavertown Brewery, East London Brewing Company, Redemption Brewing, Fourpure Brewing Co, The Redchurch Brewery and Signature Brew.

Be sure to look out for our bar in Victoria Park on the 6th & 7th of June. Not only will there be good brews with good tunes, but also some fantastic street food options from Street Feast and Venn Street Market, plus coffee from Tim Peaks.

The creativity in brewing often spills over into music, with quite a few brewhands and beer workers in bands and other music projects, as you can see above with Simon McCabe’s Lord Auch, and also Dearjoseph and Echo Lake, featuring Five Points’ Emmanuel Ross and Thom Hill respectively. London Brewers' Market

Hackney is synonymous with craft beer in London and is well represented at the London Brewers’ Market this Easter, with beers from Hackney Brewery and the event’s organisers, The Five Points Brewing Co.

I was living in Hackney when the craft beer revolution started to gather pace; it was an exciting time as new breweries seemed to be popping up every other day, and all within walking distance from my house. As well as Hackney Brewery and Five Points, other notable breweries from the borough include London Fields, Howling Hops – based in the Cock Tavern brewpub on Mare Street – and Pressure Drop; and while Beavertown is now based in Tottenham, it started life in the cellars of Duke’s Brew & Que in Haggerston.

Hackney has a rich brewing history too, with Truman’s, originally established in 1666 and closing in 1989, being re-established in 2010, emblematic of the wider London beer renaissance. And there are yet more breweries on Hackney’s borders, such as Crate Brewery in Hackney Wick (officially within the boundaries of Tower Hamlets) and One Mile End in, well, Mile End.

Given the plethora of breweries in Hackney, it’s no surprise that there are plenty of places selling Hackney-made beer. For take-away there is the Stoke Newington branch of Borough Wines on Church Street, Noble Fine Liquor on Broadway Market and Clapton Craft on Lower Clapton Road. The pubs are too many to mention, but personal favourites of mine are the Railway Tavern and Ale House on St. Jude’s Street in Dalston, the Jolly Butcher’s on Stoke Newington Road and the aforementioned Cock Tavern on Mare Street. Hell, Hackney’s so craft you can even drink good beer at the cinema: the Rio in Dalston stocks beers from Hackney Brewery, and the Hackney Picturehouse has beers from Beavertown, Bear Hug Brewing, London Fields and Crate.

But back to London Brewers’ Market. We don’t have a definitive tap or bottle list of what’s on offer, but below are my top five Hackney-brewed beers (in no particular order), including two that we may get to scoop on 28 March. It won’t escape your attention that I have a predilection for hoppy pales and IPAs…

1. Pressure Drop Pale Fire – a gorgeously bitter pale ale which, while the hop profile may alter occasionally, remains a fruity, zesty thirst-quencher of a beer, and recently made The Beer O’Clock Show’s top ten UK pale ales.

2. Five Points Hook Island Red – a delicious red rye beer packed with US hops, it’s fruity and earthy with a hint of spice, and one that I particularly enjoy on cask. At 6%, you get significant bang for your buck.

3. Hackney Brewery Amarillo Citra Pale – a veritable “Juicy Banger” of a beer. Although better known for cask ales, Hackney has recently introduced a keg range, and I stumbled across this gem at The Barge House alongside the Regent’s Canal.

4. London Fields Shoreditch Triangle IPA – at 6%, this is a dangerously sessionable IPA with a beautiful caramel malt backbone rounded by a juicy bitterness that has you downing it in no time.

5. Five Points IPA – with a tropical fruit punch that hits you as soon as you pop the cap on your bottle or are handed a pint (which is probably a silly idea given that it comes in at 7.5%), some have compared it favourably to Magic Rock’s Cannonball – but that’s for you to decide…

If you prefer less “hop-forward” beers, Hackney also does a golden ale and a best bitter, while Five Points’ Railway Porter is a fine take on the style. Either way, I’ll see you at the market. Bunny ears optional.

Started by the mighty duo of Pete Hills and Jon Swain, Hackney Brewery’s cask ales have become a fixture on the handpumps of many pubs in London and further afield. They’ve also added keg versions of their beers to their range, so be sure to check out what they’ll have on offer during the Easter Market.

Hackney Brewery are part of an excellent East London contingent on the 28th of March, including LBM organisers The Five Points Brewing Company, Redchurch Brewery and One Mile End. Taste your way around the beers of London, and take some brews home for the rest of the weekend!
