London Brewers’ Market Event Round-up: March 2017

On the London Brewers’ Market blog, we are featuring a monthly round-up of upcoming and unmissable events for London’s beer drinkers introduced by Rebecca Pate of Brewing East. Here are her picks for what’s happening in Londontown.

February was a short month that ended on a crescendo with Craft Beer Rising, the UK’s biggest craft beer festival. In comparison, March seems a bit of a downer. Wages must be spread across a full 31 days and the weather isn’t mild enough to be considered spring. March might be a month to endure, but it thankfully isn’t uneventful.

In fact, there are a number of noteworthy events hosted by London’s breweries across the month, so let’s get straight into filling your diary now. March doesn’t have to be so glum!

SIGNATURE BREW NIGHTLINER LAUNCH: Wednesday, 1 March, 7pm-11pm. Those musical bunch at Signature Brew have collaborated with  Curved Brick Co to bring you Nightliner, a 5.7% coffee porter that guarantees to be an orchestra of flavour. They’re setting up shop at The Leyton Star for the occasion, including both keg and cask versions, with a one-off special available to boot. Those burger kings We Serve Humans will keep drinkers satiated with a Nightliner-inspired special as well. The Leyton Star, 116 High Road, Leyton, London E15 2BX. Free: https://www.facebook.com/events/380411435654626/

WILD CARD TAP TAKEOVER WEEKEND AT THE CHEQUERS: Friday, 3 March until Sunday, 5 March. The Chequers in Walthamstow has invited Wild Card Brewery to man their taps for an entire weekend. In addition to their decked out core range, there will be specials on hand for eager drinkers. Even the pub’s food has been given a bit of wild makeover, with a King of Hearts blonde ale battered fish & chips or a beer fondant. There are a few events happening across the residency, including a meet the brewer sessions (7pm-9pm on Friday and 1pm-4pm on Saturday) and an acoustic lunch from 1pm-4pm on Sunday. No jokers here, folks. The Chequers, 145 High Street, London E17 7BX. Free:  https://www.facebook.com/events/1930691360487377/

INDY LAGER LAUNCH PARTY AT FOURPURE: Saturday, 4 March, 11am-10pm. Go Bermondsey way to celebrate the launch of Fourpure Brewing Co’s Indy Lager. It’s served in a Tallboy Can, that’s 500ml of drinking bliss, and promises to be a crisp, refreshing beer. The brewery crew will be hosting tours every hour between 12-4pm, first come first served. There will be free giveaways of the new addition with all of the regular favourites (and some seasonals) on at the bar. Food will be courtesy of Oh My Dog!, who might just do the best darn veggie dogs in London (their non veggie dogs also look fab too). Fourpure Brewing Co, 22 Bermondsey Trading Estate, Rotherhithe New Road, London SE16 3LL. Free: https://www.facebook.com/events/212348229237678/

BREWHEADZ SHOWCASE AT BREWDOG: Sunday, 5 March, 12pm-11pm. Brewheadz is the brainchild of three Italian friends and brewed right here in London. These guys have been doing the rounds around the city, showcasing their three core beers and receiving an enthusiastic reception. Head to BrewDog in Clapham Junction to try all three and see for yourself what the fuss is about- they’re passionate about the quality of their ingredients, which is the basis for every great beer. The team will also be happy to have a chat about their story and range on the day. BrewDog Clapham Junction, 11 – 13 Battersea Rise, London SW11 1HG. Tickets are £5 and can be purchased here.

BOOZERS WITHOUT BORDERS BACK IN (BARREL AGED) BLACK: Tuesday, 28 March, 7pm-11pm. This is a charity night for Help Refugees  hosted at The Draft House Chancery Lane that is concerned with all things DARK. Expect some serious barrel-aged and imperial stouts to make an appearance. The premise is simple: buy a ticket to have a taste of their growing beer collection – and there’s more than plenty to go around – with all profits going to charity. Unsurprisingly, a handful of London breweries are involved, including 40Ft Brewery with their Deeper 7% export stout and Orbit Beers with their Leaf Beechwood smoked rauch altbier. Boozing for charity is a good thing indeed.Draft House Chancery Lane, 1 Plough Place, London EC4A 1HY. Tickets are £35- £36 and can be purchased here.

Have we missed something? We’re not perfect, so feel free to post any upcoming events featuring London breweries in London in the comments below. This post will be edited as the month progresses to include new events, so watch this space!

Registration for London Brewers’ Market 2017 events now open

london-brewers-market-crowd-xmas-lbm-2016

With the number of breweries in London ever on the increase (we’re up to at least 91 breweries now!), this year we are introducing a registration form for London Brewers’ Alliance members to get involved in London Brewers’ Market events.

To ensure our market attendees get some of the best beer London has to offer, as well as to ensure our traders are prepared for having up to 30,000 people moving through the Old Spitalfields Market beer garden (!!), we are continuing the measures we introduced last year to ensure the best possible experience for everyone at all of our markets.

As was the case last year, all London Brewers’ Market stall holders must have 6 months’ worth of commercial trading under their belt. If you are one of the many new London breweries and have not yet been operating commercially for 6 months, you can pre-register as we’ll be happy to have you once you’ve been going!

Please register by Friday, the 17th of February, to be considered for any events in 2017! There will be another registration window later in the year, but don’t miss out on what we have planned for the first half of this year at Old Spitalfields Market and elsewhere!

Guest Post: Beyond Bermondsey: South London Breweries to Visit

We’ve got Mark Whittaker guiding us around South London breweries in this guest post! Mark is a silver-haired South Londoner and fan of the occasional beer. He writes an infrequent blog about his even less frequent homebrewing over at https://beerfrominthegarage.wordpress.com/. Full disclosure: he also works part-time for London Beer Lab. Find him on Twitter: @Mark__Whittaker

Bruno at the London Beer Lab taproom

Bored of Bermondsey? Try this alternative South London brewery tour (Warning: it’s a bit longer than a mile so may occasionally involve some transport).

It’s been 2 years now since The Kernel Brewery made the controversial (but some say justified) decision to stop opening its brewery taproom on Saturdays. But, if anything, the famed Bermondsey Beer Mile that it helped start has only grown in popularity. Weekend craft beer pilgrims making the trek between the likes of Brew By Numbers, Fourpure, Southwark, Ansbach & Hobday and Partizan, and also the UBrew and the EeBria taprooms, can regular expect fresh, high quality and often exclusive brews. Opening times have been extended but with success comes crowds. At some taprooms you’ll often have to queue upwards of half an hour to get served on a Saturday afternoon and don’t expect anywhere to sit down. Plus, once you’ve done The Mile a few times, you might want to expand your drinking to some of London’s other 70+ breweries.

Our tour of just some of South London’s finest starts under the shadow of the Crystal Palace Tower. 5 minutes’ walk from Gipsy Hill station (direct trains from London Bridge and Victoria) is the Hamilton Road Industrial Estate, although when you get there the first sign you’ll notice is not for this neighbourhood’s eponymous brewery, but The London Beer Factory.

Founded in early 2014 by brothers Ed and Sim Cotton, The London Beer Factory has always committed to producing beer with character, unique flavours, engaging aromas, brimming with personality and distinctive qualities. With a core range of 5 beers, plus an alternating monthly Pilot Range, they recently launched the UK’s first 360 degree opening cans, and their Beer Cab is a regular feature at many London beer events. Their tap room and bottle shop is open every Saturday, but check the website for current times, plus details of occasional events (including regular live rugby match screenings).

If you walk out of The London Beer Factory and glance left, you will now see the Gipsy Hill Brewing Company, who, in this writer’s opinion, are currently making some of the best beer in London. Going from strength to strength, and with a core range of beers all under 5%, Gipsy Hill focus on beers with big taste that you can still drink by the pint. Their tap room bar is currently closed due to brewery expansion but their bottle shop is open every Saturday, 1pm – 6pm. Check back for details on the reopening in the spring – in the meantime, lots of Gipsy Hill events are happening at their micropub, the Douglas Fir, on the other side of Crystal Palace, but unfortunately, that’s in the wrong direction for this tour.

Next, you’re heading to Herne Hill – either a mile and a half walk, or you can hop on either 3 or 322 bus (check TFL for times and directions) – for Bullfinch Brewery. After originally starting out sharing a Bermondsey railway arch with Mssrs Ansbach & Hobday, the Bullfinch soon flew a few miles south to set up it’s on brewery, with a historic 5 barrel kit originally built by Charles Wells no less. With a tap room in the adjacent arch open Thursday through Friday (4pm – 10pm), Saturday & Sunday (midday – 10pm), there are usually 12 different beers on tap, from the Bullfinch’s core range, some experimental and exclusive brew that you’ll only find here, plus the occasional guest.

Resist the temptation to stay at Bullfinch for the rest of the day and it’s a short hop around the corner to the Canopy Beer Co, tucked in the Bath Factory Estate, one of the most welcoming tap rooms in the city. If it’s sunny, be sure to try the Champion Kolsch or Sunray Pale, otherwise head indoors for a Milkwood Amber or Full Moon Porter. Canopy is open Wednesday through Friday (5-11pm), Saturday (12-11pm) and Sunday (12-10pm).

You have a choice again next for either bus, train or your own two feet to take you the mile to Brixton for, wait for it… Brixton Brewery! Founded in 2013, BB is a family-run, community business with a core range of beers brewed in small batches. The tap room is usually open every Saturday, 12-6pm (but they recommend you check the website or Twitter first), and they also offer tours and tastings (see website for details).

For your final tap room of the day, turn left out of Brixton Brewery and along Brixton Station Road past POP! Brixton and the Brixton branch of the Craft Beer Co. until you hit Brixton Road. Take a left here then right over Brixton Road, through the alley known as Dorrell Place (by the M&S) and onto Nursery Road. Head left and then tucked in behind the railway bridge on your immediate right, you’ll find London Beer Lab at Arch 41.

London Beer Lab has been running beer making workshops and selling homebrew supplies here since 2012. In 2015 they started brewing commercially (under another railway arch off Coldharbour Lane), with plans to expand production in 2017. The Nursery Road taproom is also undergoing something of a revamp, with upwards of 10 beers soon to be on tap from across their range, with a few seasonals and some small batch brews made in the upstairs workshop, plus an extensive bottleshop of beers from around the world. Current opening times are Thursday 5.30pm – 7.30pm, Friday 2pm – 8pm, Saturday 12 – 8pm and Sunday 12 – 7pm.

That concludes our short tour, although the beer doesn’t have to stop there. Within a mile or two of Brixton if you head in a variety of directions there are ever more breweries and taprooms. How about north towards Elephant & Castle for Orbit Beers, or south west to Tooting for By The Horns then Wandsworth Common for Belleville? Or head east to Peckham for Brick Brewery and Bianca Road Brew Co. Or maybe save those for another tour. There are plenty more beer miles in London than just Bermondsey’s!

London Brewers’ Market Event Round-up: January 2017

In the dawn of a new year, it’s time to blow away the cobwebs of 2016 and begin anew!

Last year brought a number of fantastic beer events, so we have no doubt that 2017 will trump it. There’s no better excuse to support the Tryanuary movement, which encourages us to try new independent breweries, beers, bars and bottle shops. The idea is to drink less and more meaningfully. After December indulgences, this sounds like a great plan.

So to get you started, here’s some of January’s offerings:

BULLFINCH MEET THE BREWER: Thursday, 19 January, 6:30pm. Beer and tunes marry perfectly, don’t they? So this event, where the Strongroom Bar & Kitchen resident DJ will be spinning tracks inspired by the beers and the brewers from Bullfinch Brewery, is bound to be banging. Their beers will be flowing and the Bullfinch team will be available for a chat about their beer and its global influences too. If the music is as good as the beer, this will be an unmissable night.Strongroom Bar & Kitchen, 120-124 Curtain Road, London EC2A 3SQ. Free: https://www.facebook.com/events/821798217962702/

DESERTER WINTER SOCIAL:  Thursday, 19 January, 3.55-11pm. Lifestyle website Deserter is aimed at those who try to get the most out of life doing less. They’ve collaborated with South London’s Southey Brewing to create the Deserter IPA in cask and keg. Attendees are encouraged to bunk off work and enjoy a free pint from the Deserter crew – there’s one cask to give away, so the earlier you get out of work, the better your chances. Of course, we do not condone bunking. But we won’t tell if you don’t. London Beer Dispensary, 389 Brockley Road, London SE4 2PH. Free: https://www.facebook.com/events/237712546656303/

40FT YEAHNUARY CAT & MUTTON TAP TAKEOVER: Friday, 20 January, 7pm-1am. Those fun folks at 40FT are hosting a tap takeover and DJ night at The Cat & Mutton on Broadway Market. Enjoy some excellent brews from the Dalston brewery alongside some immense tunes all evening long. The Cat & Mutton, 76 Broadway Market, London E8 4QJ. Free: https://www.facebook.com/events/103034956872588/

AFFINITY’S BIG JANUARY BASH: Saturday, 21 January, 12- 9pm. The Redchurch Brewery

Like a lot of good ideas, the concept of Signature Brew was born in a pub when two cousins, tired of drinking mediocre overpriced lager in music venues decided change needed to be brought. In 2011, with a little help from some internationally renowned bands and musicians Sam and Tom started delivering on their commitment to get good beer into the hands of gig goers. Fast forward 5 years and their vision lives on through Signature Brews core range of music inspired beers and their regular collaborations.
