London Brewers’ Market Event Round-up: November 2016

On the London Brewers’ Market blog, we are featuring a monthly round-up of upcoming and unmissable events for London’s beer drinkers introduced by Rebecca Pate of Brewing East. Here are her picks for what’s happening in Londontown. 

Bring on November, with its cooler nights and shorter days. London is braced for you. In spite of your best efforts, we refuse to loaf around when there’s so much to do and such great beer to conquer.

We welcome this month with another round-up of the best beer events because as the woolly layers go on and daylight disappears, we have to do something to keep our sanity:

FIVE POINTS TAP TAKEOVER: Wednesday, 2 November, 17:00-23:00. Another corker from the good folks at The Rake pub in Borough Market, this tap takeover showcases Hackney’s The Five Points Brewing Co. Expect a range of their beers on cask, keg and in bottle together with chipper representatives on hand to answer any burning questions. ANSPACH & HOBDAY TASTING & TOUR: Thursday, November 3, 18:30-21:30. One of the Bermondsey brewery crew, Anspach & Hobday invite you on a behind-the-scenes tour of their railway arch outfit, to meet the brewer and taste three of their beers (with another beer on arrival). Focused on making London the epicentre of the best beer in the world, this is a brewery with a mission- and they’re well on the way, from what we’ve tasted. BRIXTON BREWERY TASTINGS + TOURS: Friday, 4 November & Friday, 24 November, 18:30- 22:00. Join Brixton Brewery‘s founder, Jez Galaun, on an evening tour. Highlights include an overview of the brewing process and tasters of 4 beers with ample opportunity to find out more about this South London family-run operation. Their bold flavours and vibrant branding are as colourful as the local area, so escape the dreariness of November with some dynamic beer and insight into one of London’s most community-focused breweries. HOP SWAP V.4 FEATURING MONDO BREWING: Tuesday, 8 November, 20:00-23:00. This month’s Hop Swap brings together a brewery, a baker and a candlestick maker. Well, maybe not the last one, but Battersea’s Mondo Brewing Company will be in attendance for a meet the brewer and tap takeover at The Cock Tavern in Hackney. Thai in a Pie will be dishing out their fusion-filled parcels and competing against marinara masters, Capish?, in a hot sauce showdown. All of this madness will unfold against the backdrop of a good old-fashioned bottle share- so be sure to have something special in tow- and even a mystery trade raffle that will have people talking for days. BEAVERTOWN PARTY AT MASON & CO: Wednesday, 9 November, 18:00-23:00. Hackney Wick hotspot Mason & Company are throwing a Beavertown Brewery tap takeover of collosal proportions: 18 taps will see the seven core beers represented alongside 11 specials and limited editions. Expect Phantom Sours, Elder Mother Elderberry Pale and Fresh ‘espresso Stout, with more surprises on the night. The team will be journeying in from Tottenham Hale to talk beer and – for the culture vultures – some of their legendary artwork will be on display. The Leyton Orient Supporters Club are holding a special evening to celebrate being awarded Greater London Club of the Year 2016 by CAMRA in appropriate style, putting on a commendable line-up of cask that showcases a number of local breweries. The Five Points Brewing Co, Hackney Brewery and One Mile End Brewery are on the bill. Signature Brew debuted their Roadie IPA on cask during a recent tap takeover and this will be available on the night. THE BREWERY KITCHEN SUNDAY LUNCH: Sunday, 13 November, 13:00-17:00. Here’s one for the foodies- Fourepure Brewing Co has teamed up with The Brewery Kitchen to showcase how beer and brewing ingredients can be incorporated into cooking. A cornucopia across three courses is promised, with each dish matched with beer to bring out the complexities in both the food and libations. The Brewery Kitchen’s head chef will be on hand alongside a sommelier to act as guides and canapes and a welcome drink are also included. Your Sunday roast will pale in comparison to this feast. BULLFINCH TAP TAKEOVER: Thursday, 17 November, 17:00-23:00. Yet another event at The Rake, this tap takeover sees Herne Hill’s Bullfinch Brewery take the reigns. Expect a selection of their beer and a chance to chat with the Bullfinch team about their adventurous, flavoursome beer. FOURPURE MEET THE BREWER AND TASTING: Friday, 18 November, 18:00-20:00. Friday night is best spent with friends, so why not head over to The Taproom in Woolwich Arsenal for a tasting and chinwag with Fourpure Brewing Co? They’ll be sampling five of their freshest seasonal beers and offering 10% off pizzas in the taproom on the night to keep drinkers sustained. Free registration includes a half pint too. >>new>> 40FT CEILI OUTSIDE A CONTAINER PARTY: Friday, 18 November, 18:00- Saturday, 19 November, 02:00. Just in time for the plummeting temperatures, the guys at 40FT Brewery are relaunching Deep, their rich and malty stout. This will be an authentic Irish affair, where Hugh Cooney will be leading a ceili with the help from traditional in-house Irish band from The Auld Shillelagh pub. REDEMPTION & WEIRD BEARD DUAL TAP TAKEOVER: Saturday, 19 November, 12:00-23:00. Head down to The Craft Beer Co Clerkenwell for this tantalising dual tap takeover. Not one but TWO great breweries, Redemption Brewing and Weird Bread Brew Co, will join forces to bring drinkers a range of their core and special beers. Naturally, there will also be an exclusive collaboration available on the night and the opportunity to snap up some merchandise, mini kegs and other delights. The Craft Beer Co. ANSPACH & HOBDAY BEER AND CAKE DAY: Sunday, 20 November, 12:30-17:30. Professed to be the biggest event of the year- Anspach & Hobday Brewery are marrying two of life’s greatest pleasures: beer and cake. They’ll provide the beer and invite guests to come to the brewery bearing cakes. Only 15 cakes can be accommodated and contributing bakers will each get a pint courtesy of A&H. Cakes will be judged and one will emerge victorious- there’s a prize of a case of beer and a brewery tour on the line. But really, everyone wins here. Somebody has to eat all of those cakes. >>new>> HOP STUFF & DRURY TEA & COFFEE BEER LAUNCH: Thursday, 24 November, 18:00-22:30. Woolwich’s Hop Stuff Brewery put their heads together with Drury Tea & Coffee to create three coffee-themed beers in 2015. This year, they’re upping the ante and hosting a party in their taproom to promote their three 2016 collaboration beers: Early Grey Pale Ale, Spiced Chai Red Ale and Coffee Infused Gunners Porter. There will be tasting flights and other coffee-related goodies available, including food inspired by java. LONDON BREWERS’ MARKET CHRISTMAS EDITION: Saturday, 26 November, 11:00-18:30. Jingle beers, jingle beers…What’s better than turkey dinner and Eastenders? A Christmas beer festival, of course! Taking place at Old Spitalfields Market, the Christmas edition of the London Brewers’ Market is going to be a jolly affair with 26 London breweries already confirmed. Beer will be available on keg and to purchase and a stellar soundtrack will be provided by the event’s co-hosts, the Independent Label Market. You can expect some old favourites and new faces in attendance, so this is a great way to familiarise yourself with London’s brewing scene all while stocking up for Crimbo. Old Spitalfields Market, Brushfield Street, London E1 6AA. >>new>> 33RD PIG’S EAR BEER & CIDER FESTIVAL: Tuesday, 29 November, 12:00- Saturday, 3 December, 22:30. Pig’s ear is Cockney rhyming slang for beer, and that’s exactly what is promised at this year’s East London & City’s CAMRA event. Over 230 real ales will be on offer, plus a huge range of bottles, perries and ciders to boot. Keep an eye on their website for announcements, but it’s assured that there will be some special beers on cask from local East London breweries alongside a range of other foreign and domestic beers. With the last of the beer garden weather upon us, it’s time to accept the change of season and hole ourselves up with a cosy pint. For beer drinkers, October brings the close of Oktoberfest celebrations and the season of highly divisive pumpkin beers. But if neither of these prospects takes your fancy, there are plenty of other events to satisfy your autumnal cravings.

You might feel pressure to bid adieu to sours and saisons in lieu of more warming styles, but whatever you’re drinking, we’ve put together a list of our pick of events across London this October:

HAMMERTON BREWERY TAPROOM OPENING: Saturday, 1 October, 14:00-23:00. Head over to N7 (that’s Islington) to have a drink amongst locals at Hammerton Brewery’s monthly taproom opening. There’s plenty of table space inside and be sure to sample their new Chicha Pale, a Peruvian Maize Morada. They’re dog-friendly too, so why not take Rover for an extra long walk? HIBERNATION PARTY WITH ORBIT BEERS: Saturday, 1 October, 12:00-20:00. Here’s your incentive to embrace the first frost of winter. Orbit Beers are throwing a party at their brewery to honour the season and while the vinyl spins, there will be bratwurst and currywurst proffered from Get Wurst. WE BROUGHT BREW BY NUMBERS: Wednesday, 5 October, 19:00-22:00. Bermondsey’s Brew by Numbers will be chatting beer at We Brought Beer’s Clapham Junction location. Their recent endeavours have been exceptional, including their long-awaited foray into pale ales. If attendees are lucky, the new 21|04 Pale Ale (Motueka) might be on offer. MEET THE BREWER WITH WILD CARD BREWERY: Wednesday, 5 October, from 20:00. The Beer Shop London is hosting a Meet the Brewer night with Wild Card Brewery. This is the perfect opportunity to see what’s brewing and what’s in the pipelines for this Walthamstow favourite. WALTHAMSTOW BEER PROJECT 2016 WITH ELB: Thursday, 6 October from 18:30. East London Brewing Company invite you to Ye Olde Rose and Crown for the launch of their Walthamstow Beer. Over the summer, over 200 Prima Donna hop plants were grown in the area and harvested in mid-September to create this green hopped ale. CRAFT 100 BEER FESTIVAL: Thursday, 6 October, 12:00 until Sunday October 9, 23:00. The Craft Beer Co’s Clapham location will be transformed into a utopia of beer aplenty for this unmissable event. With over 100 beers on offer, there’s something guaranteed to tickle your taste buds, including beer from Beavertown Brewery, Brixton Brewery, By the Horns Brewing Co., Hackney Brewery, Kew Brewery, Redemption Brewing, Partizan Brewing and Weird Beard Brew Co.– and that’s just on keg. FIVE POINTS BREWERY TOUR: Saturday, 8 October, 12:00-14:00. Take a trip to Hackney for The Five Points Brewing Company’s monthly brewery tour, where guests are guided through their story and their range, all in the heart of the action on the brewery floor. See the brewing kit and the canning line, where the newly canned Pils has been flying out. Generous samples and a glass to take home are included in the ticket price. IPA VS CHEESE WITH BREW BY NUMBERS: Thursday, 13 October, 18:00-21:00. Beer and cheese, need we say more? Take a range of Brew by Numbers‘ IPAs personally selected by Chris Hall, the brewery’s Sales and Media guru, married with a cornucopia of British cheeses chosen by Ned Palmer (Edited to add: “Legend!”) of The Cheese Tasting Company and- well, you get the idea. MEAT + BEER WITH BRIXTON BREWERY: Thursday, 13 October, 19:00-20:30. October is bursting with foodie options for beer drinkers, including this enticing event from the Meat School in Borough Market. A selection of fine British cured meats will be expertly paired with beer from Brixton Brewery. This is not for the faint hearted, however, as 5 courses of meat, each one paired with a beer from Brixton, are included in the ticket price. CROYDON CRAFT BEER FESTIVAL: Thursday, 13 October, 2016 17:00 until Saturday October 15, 2016 19:00. Held at Braithwaite Hall, this is the third Croydon Craft Beer Festival with an Oktoberfest theme. While oodles of beers from around the world will be available in cans, there’s a good representation form London breweries too, including: Belleville Brewing Co, By the Horns Brewing Co, The London Beer Factory and Croydon’s own darlings, The Cronx Brewery. OKTOBEERFEST WITH WILD CARD BREWERY: Friday, 14 October, 20:00- Saturday October 15, 22:00. For a taste of Bavaria, make a beeline to Wild Card Brewery’s taproom to sample over 30 beers, including a special small batch raspberry wheat beer brewed for the occasion. There’s an eclectic selection of music promised all weekend, including DJ sets with some synth pop, disco and…kraut rock? Well, we’re intrigued. BAVARIAN BREAKFAST WITH ONE MILE END: Saturday, 15 October, 9:00-14:00. Science has proven that beer is the breakfast of champions* and science is never wrong, so don’t miss the opportunity to sample One Mile End Brewery’s new wheat beer at The White Hart. Their head brewer will be onsite and beer will be poured from 9am to accompany the brew pub’s new tantalising brunch menu. FIVE POINTS AUTUMN JOLLY: Saturday, 15 October, 13:00-22:00.Following the rip-roaring fun of The Five Points Brewing Company‘s summer yard parties, they’ve taken the same ingredients- e.g. great beer, outstanding eats from Capish? and formidable beats- and reinvented the monthly affair for the season. Come try the Brick Field Brown launched in cask and the Five Points Extra Pale relaunched as Five Points XPA. Surprises are assured and there’s a special meet the brewer session with Vito himself, who is the brains behind the Brick Field Brown. ELENA COOPER’S PORTER WITH REDEMPTION: Monday, 17 October, 18:00-23:30. Head down to the Holborn Whippet to sample Elena Cooper’s Porter, a new brew from Redemption Brewing Company to commemorate the London Beer Flood of the 17 October, 1814. On this solemn day, a torrent of beer flooded  Tottenham Court Road and killed 8 people. Raise a glass of this porter that has been smoked with oak chips alongside representatives from the brewery. BRICK FIELD BROWN LAUNCH WITH PETE BROWN: Tuesday, 18 October, 18:00-22:00. Eminent beer writer Pete Brown joins The Five Points Brewing Company in launching their latest cask ale offering at The Harp in Covent Garden. Two hour-long sessions will be held in The Harp’s cosy upstairs room, where The Five Points’ Assistant Head Brewer Vito Carrescia will introduce his Brick Field Brown, and Pete Brown will share his thoughts about the brown ale style as well as discuss his new book, The Pub: A Cultural Institution. Tickets are £10 + booking fee, which includes a pint of Brick Field Brown, and proceeds from each ticket sale go to St Joseph’s Hospice. WE BROUGHT REDCHURCH: Wednesday, 19 October, 19:00-22:00. Another meet the brewer event hosted by We Brought Beer, this time at their Balham site. East London’s The Redchurch Brewery will be talking guests through their new foray into wild beers with their Urban Farmhouse project. These experimental beers hail from  their old brewery, which is now dedicated to wild and sour brewing. Guests will sample some of the first batches, so don’t miss out. BREWDOG #COLLABFEST 2016: Saturday, 22 October, 13:00 – Sunday October 23, 0:00. Each of London’s Brewdog locations will be brewing up some special delights with the help of a local brewery. Details are still hush-hush on what to expect, but last year saw some great London breweries thrown in the mix, including Orbit Beers, Weird Beard Brew Co., Brew by Numbers and The Redchurch Brewery. LONDON BREWERS’ MARKET AT VENN STREET MARKET: Saturday, 22 October, 10:00 – 16:00. London Brewers’ Market will be holding a showcase of South London Breweries (oh, and a certain Hackney brewery that organises LBM) at the wonderful Venn Street Market, a weekly food market in Clapham Common. Breweries include The Five Points Brewing Company, Anspach & Hobday, Gipsy Hill Brewing Company, Mondo Brewing Company, and Orbit Beers, who will all be selling beer to drink on the day and for take away. HACKNEY BREWERY’S 5TH BIRTHDAY: Saturday, 22 October, 13:00 – 19:00. The mighty Hackney Brewery celebrate their 5th Birthday with some of their fantastic brews, including their Oktoberfest and a brand new Pale Ale, plus a look around their newly-installed brewing equipment! There will be some surprises of a sour nature in store. *new* MEET THE BREWER WITH BEAVERTOWN: Thursday, 27 October, 19:30-21:00. The Beavertown Brewery crew are paying The Coborn a visit to guide drinkers through their brewing process from hops to pints. Attendees will also be tutored through four different beers and learn that when it comes to packaging, why the can is king. It’s a great time to get on the Beavertown bandwagon. On the London Brewers’ Market blog, we are featuring a monthly round-up of upcoming and unmissable events for London’s beer drinkers introduced by Rebecca Pate of Brewing East. Here are her picks for what’s happening in Londontown. 

London’s breweries hardly stop to catch their breath during the summer months and the events keep rolling in. But as September rears its head, the balmy evenings are curtailed and our time spent lounging in beer gardens will be (rudely) interrupted by cooler temperatures and shortened daylight hours.

It’s a hard pill to swallow, but there’s still time to squeeze the most out of the summer. We must relish the last of the saisons before moving on to the comforting embrace of a stout!

To ease the transition, we give you a round-up of September’s unmissable events in London:

MEET THE BREWER WITH REDCHURCH: Thursday the 1st of September from 20:00. Head down to the Beer Shop London to catch up with The Redchurch Brewery and swill some of their range. MS. SHAKESPEARE AT WILD CARD BREWERY: Thursday the 1st of September from 18:30-23:00. The wonderful Wild Card Brewery are hosting an evening with Garden Gate Arts showcasing competition-winning new writing from four female playwrights, who will have their short plays staged as rehearsed readings for the very first time. TASTING EVENT WITH ONE MILE END: Friday the 2nd of September from 19:00. Following their big move to their new Tottenham digs, One Mile End are hosting a tasting event at Mother Kelly’s Bottle Shop. FIVE POINTS YARD PARTY: Saturday the 3rd of September from 13:00-20:00. Once again, The Five Points Brewing Company are opening up their warehouse yard to the public once again. Expect their range on tap, food from pop-up Italian-American purveyors Capish? and live music to get drinkers dancing. This will be a special occasion, as they will be celebrating the launch of their Pils in a can in all its glorious violet glory. SAMBROOK’S BREWERY TOUR: Wednesday the 7th of September at 19:00. Get inside Sambrook’s Brewery in Battersea for a tour lead by head brewer, Sean Knight. Three half pint samples are served alongside the history of brewery, an explanation of the brewing process and the secret to brewing award-winning beer. You might need to take notes. THE BRICK LANE BEER FESTIVAL: Friday the 9th of September, 15:00. Promising a range of beers from By The Horns Brewing Co., Brixton Brewery and Rocky Head Brewery, this is a solid bet for quaffing a selection of beers from some noteworthy breweries based outside of East London. Beer By the River

BEER BY THE RIVER 2016: Saturday the 10th of September, 12:00-22:00. Beer? Check. Food? Check. Music? Check. This event is being thrown by Sambrook’s Brewery and promises to be a day bursting with good times. Set on Tooting Common, over 25 breweries will be represented, including a liberal range of Sambrook’s own beer. FIVE POINTS BREWERY TOUR: Saturday the 10th of September, 12:00-14:00. The monthly tour offered by The Five Points Brewing Company is the perfect balance of education and libation. You’ll be guided through beer with plenty of samples and- if you’re lucky- might get to stick your head in the mash tun. MEET THE BREWER WITH REDEMPTION: Thursday the 15th of September, 18:00-22:00. This is your chance to catch up with Andy Moffat, head brewer and owner of Redemption Brewing Co. based in Tottenham. Stalwarts of the London brewing scene, why not stop by to catch up with the brewery and hear about their brand new brewing site? THE RAINBOW PROJECT AT BEAVERTOWN BREWERY: Saturday the 17th of September, 14:00-20:00. POP-UP SUPPER CLUB AT BULLFINCH BREWERY: Wednesday the 21st of September, 19:00-22:00. La Petite Bouchee will be serving up French-inspired bistro classics for this pop-up supper club event at the Bullfinch Brewery in Herne Hill. Rillette and tartes are on the menu and diners can opt for classic moules mariniere in white wine or in a sauce made from Bullfinch’s own Milou saison. Here are her picks, and stay tuned for a later post focusing exclusively on all the London brewers’ events at London Beer City.

With August comes London Beer City, ten days replete with beer festivals, tap takeovers and meet the brewer events starting this Friday, the 5th, and running until Sunday, the 14th. Beer aficionados will have already trawled through the immense itinerary, but we can’t let this eclipse other exciting happenings across the capital throughout the month.

We’ve compiled a list of events unaffiliated with London Beer City to further enhance your August. Whether it’s to help you ease into the month, keep you energised during LBC 2016 or to temper the harshness of LBC 2016 withdrawal, here’s more to pencil into your diary:

RICHMOND BREWERS’ FAIR: Saturday August 6, 12:00-19:30. Although it’s based in Surrey, some London breweries are featured as part of this CAMRA real ales event, including Kew Brewery and Long Arm Brewing Company. It follows the success of the inaugural Brewers’ Fair held in February and promises beer, live music and food stalls.

GREAT BRITISH BEER FESTIVAL: Tuesday, 9 August- Saturday, 13 August. Various times. This CAMRA-run festival will showcase over 900 real ales alongside ciders, perries and international beers. Come celebrate some great local examples and raise a glass to cask. In between libation, live music, food stalls and even traditional pub games will be on offer, all under a single roof with 55,000 other thirsty patrons at Olympia London. Who will be crowned 2016’s the Champion Beer of Britain? We’re on tenterhooks.

THE RAKE’S 10TH ANNIVERSARY: Wednesday, 10 August. Two sessions: 12:00-17:00 & 17:30- 22:00. The Rake in Borough Market- London’s coveted specialist beer outlet- is celebrating ten successful years in business with an evening hosted by Melissa Cole, esteemed and award-winning beer and food writer. COLLABORATION RANGE / HOME BREW DEPOT LA LAUNCH PARTY: Thursday, 11 August, 19:00-01:00 (12 August). Home Brew Depot is hoping to crack the American market and to celebrate, they’re releasing two collaboration recipes with One Mile End and Hackney Brewery. The former is the home brewer’s version of Snakes Alive DIPA and the latter is a summery saison. Both head brewers will be live brewing on the night, there will be beers available from the breweries and live music to boot.

ONE KEG WONDER SERIES – BREW BY NUMBERS: Thursday, 11 August, 19:00. This is the launch of Simon the Tanner’s One Keg Wonder series and they have something very special lined up for the night: a maple pecan brown ale from Brew By Numbers that’s never seen light within the M25. One keg only means just that: once it’s gone, it’s gone. Three other beers from Brew By Numbers will also be available on the night.

CRATE BEER & LA FROMAGERIE CHEESE TASTING: Thursday, 11 August, 18:00 & 20:00. Nothing marries quite like beer and cheese. Hackney Wick’s canalside hotspot, Crate Brewery, will be pairing four of their beers, including some examples of their limited Brewers Tap range, with cheese from La Fromagerie. Guided by beer sommelier & maître fromager Tom Williams, this will brie a gouda time.

SAMBROOK’S BREW SCHOOL: Saturday, 20 August, 12:00-17:00. Sambrook’s Brewery welcomes brewmasters and novices alike to create a perfect iteration of a craft beer with the Grainfather, an all-in-one homebrew system. MEET THE BREWER- HIVER: Wednesday, 24 August, 18:30-20:30. Hiver Beers have been causing a buzz with their range of beer fermented with raw honeys. Using British ingredients and suppliers, Hiver has salvaged the reputation of honey beer from other artificial, cloying interpretations on the market. Have a chat with the team and pollinate your palate with samples of the beer. Oh, and brush up on your entomology- there’s prizes at stake on the night.
