London Brewers’ Market Round-up: January 2018

On the London Brewers’ Market blog, we are featuring a monthly round-up of upcoming and unmissable events for London’s beer drinkers introduced by Rebecca Pate of Brewing East. Here are her picks for what’s happening in Londontown.

January was a month once marred with guilty consciences following the overindulgences of Christmas and the Dryanuary movement. But no longer! Thankfully, the Tryanuary campaign has really taken off, which encourages support for independent breweries and businesses in the beer industry.

And so we’ve compiled a list of January’s events around London to help you get involved in all of the fun – and to support the beer industry in this challenging month.

TAPROOM OPENING PARTY AND BEER LAUNCH: Friday, January 12, 4pm-11pm. Join Partizan Brewing to not only officially celebrate the opening of their shiny new taproom, but to enjoy their first special beer launch of the year. It’s called Tropical Rubicon Courage, a pina colada-inspired double dryhopped IPA that sounds absolutely delectable (and was the last brew of their much loved brewer, Chris, who is moving on). The team will be hosting a beat the brewer competition too, with beery prizes on the line. Partizan Brewing, 34 Raymouth Road, SE16 2DB. Free, more information here.

TRYANUARY RUNNING CLUB: Saturday, January 13, 12pm-1pm. This collaborative effort between Mason & Company and Beer Boars will tempt those who’ve resolved to get moving in 2018. Come along to Mason & Company for either an easygoing 5km or 10km, guided through The Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park or Victoria Park. It’s free and all participants get 50% off a Five Points Brewing Company beer. Mason & Company, 25 East Bay Lane, Here East, Hackney Wick, E20 3BS. Free, more information here.

TASTING SESSION WITH NIRVANA BREWERY: Wednesday, January 17, 7pm-9pm. Check out Crouch Hill’s newest craft beer spot, Brave Sir Robin, for a tasting session and meet the brewer with Nirvana Brewery. Nirvana specialises in low and no alcohol beers, so this might be right up your alley if you’re cutting back for January. Low alcohol beers are set to be very popular in 2018, so see what the fuss is about. Brave Sir Robin, 29 Crouch Hill, N4 4AP. Free, more information here.

*new* AFFINITY BREW TAP TAKEOVER: Thursday, January 25, 7pm. Having recently moved from Tottenham to a bigger site in Bermondsey, the guys at Affinity Brew Co have a lot to celebrate. Join both founders, Ben Duckworth and Steve Grae, at Bernsteins Bar and enjoy a selection of their beers on tap, including their Breeze lime and coriander saison, LOLmash double stout, Ember winter saison and January coffee and walnut ruby mild. There will also be some culinary delights available from the kitchen inspired by the beer. Bernsteins Bar, 73 Chatsworth Road, E5 0LH. Free, more information here.

SAMBROOK’S BREWERY TRYANUARY PARTY: Friday, January 26, 5pm-10.30pm.
This marks the first party of a series of ten happening across the year to celebrate the brewery’s 10th anniversary! This one’s aimed at celebrating the joy of discovering and tasting new beers and flavours, and in this spirit of new things, the folks at Sambrook’s will be re-launching old favourites, and launching new, special brews. Sambrook’s Brewery Taproom, SW11 3QG. Tickets are £25 (+ fees) which includes all drinks at the open bar.

THE TRYANUARY HACKNEY BEER HOP: Saturday, January 27, 12pm-5pm. The Five Points Brewing Company are hosting their annual Tryanuary pub crawl, this time with a focus on Hackney Wick. Grab a £7 ticket (all proceeds going to Hackney Winter Night Shelter) and you’ll discover Tap East, Howling Hops, Crate Brewery, Four Quarters East and Mason & Company. You’ll even get a tinnie along the way to make walking between locations that much easier (it really isn’t far). Various sites. Tickets are £7 (plus booking fee) and can be purchased here.

SATURDAY SESSIONS: WINTER WARMERS WITH FIVE POINTS: Saturday, January 27, 1pm and 3pm. The Five Points Brewing Company are showcasing their superb darker beers with tutored tastings at Mason & Company. The first session is already sold out, but there are tickets available for the 3pm sitting. For £10, you’ll get samples of five beers and even 10% off of Capish? food on the day. Mason & Company, 25 East Bay Lane, Here East, Hackney Wick, E20 3BS. Tickets are £10 and can be purchased here.

GIPSY HILL BREWING MEET THE BREWER AT PARK FEVER: Wednesday, January 31. Craft beer and chocolate. Oh, hello! Head down to Hither Green’s newest bottleshop, Park Fever, to hang out with the Gipsy Hill brewers, taste their beers and nibble on a choco, or two. 21a Staplehurst Rd, SE13 5ND. Email adrian@parkfever.co.uk to reserve your place.

BLINDSIDE CHARITY LAUNCH: Wednesday, January 31, 5pm. Sample Blindside, the rugby seasonal beer from Truman’s, at this special launch at The Globe Tavern in Borough Market. Every penny is going toward charity the School of Hard Knocks (SOHK), which uses sport to tackle issues linked to unemployment, health and fitness. For this event, Blindside will be only beer pouring, so you can head down and enjoy the feeling of drinking for a good cause all night long. The Globe Tavern, 8 Bedale St, SE1 9AL. Free, more information here.
